Don't they play a terrific version of this song at the "other" Seminole '69 gig? (Other than the one that came up yesterday) I remember looking at the set list and kinda yawning at Was A Friend and then going, "Wow. This is really rather good!" Definitely the first time I sat up and noticed it. And if memory serves me it neatly slides into a great China Cat!

the Seminole gigs were seminal.

We had a seminar on them if you recall, and semolina was enjoyed as Garcia, Lesh and Weir wailed on those semitone during Saint Semen.

I cannot speak to that one, BUT did just listen to 6-7-69, and can say that that one stands up well...still like the above (4-12-69) better, but...as noted above, the vocals are hard to nail just right.

Amazing, really, that the boys would try to do these sorts of songs. On the other hand, perhaps prepared them well for the upcoming efforts on Workingman's and American Beauty, when for once and for all, they shined, vocally. Never to be replicated again, IMHO.

Yeah, though American Beauty sparkles in many moments and I have to say I love their vocals on Reckoning and the overdub vocals on Europe '72.

If I had my Deadbase (I would take you home) I'd confirm that Pow Wow He Was a Friend...it's a killer set. Right up your street William.
